2024

2024 is here. I’ve been amused so far this year by how many companies seem to feel the need to make Your Year Recap things for all their customers. After all, if people will share their Spotify Wrapped, they will probably share anything. You can now share how many donuts you ate last year and what kind of donut consumer you are. (I’m probably a Sprinkle Queen.)

Of course, there are some stats that I’d rather not know, like if I’ve spent five thousand hours last year playing Minecraft. For instance.

I recently learned the value of the shield in Minecraft. If I hold the shield then the creeper can blow up right in front of me without hurting me at all! It’s my new favorite thing to do in Minecraft.

For a while, I’d planned on building houses every two hundred blocks so that at any given time, everyone would be close to one of my houses and I’d always be able to find them again, but I had to quit when I just kept having to build ocean house after ocean house. I enjoy building the occasional underwater house, but eventually, I’m ready to be on dry land again.

After all, my shield is basically useless against drowns, especially if they have tridents.

Anyway, the topic today was meant to be the new year, not Minecraft. Those of you who know me will know that I don’t really believe in New Year’s resolutions. At least not for myself. I can see that they could be good for other people, but I find they are worse than useless for me.

I’m reminded of the Poorly Drawn Lines comic where Mouse says that this will be the year he gets his life together and then Bird says that Mouse said that last year and then Mouse is like, I did? Well, that didn’t work out.

I prefer to look back over my previous year, celebrate the good, let go of the bad, and face the coming year without striving to better myself because if I could improve by trying harder, I already would have done so.

Professionally, 2023 was a great year for me. I published two and a half books. I wrote a lot. I learned a lot. It was a great year. And I can’t wait to see what 2024 brings.

Happy New Year, everyone!
