Return of the Beeping

I know all my readers are deeply invested in the saga of my smoke detectors. The other night, the smoke detector right outside my bedroom started beeping again at two in the morning. And that wouldn’t be so bad except that we had changed the batteries a few weeks ago when it woke us up in the middle of the night that time.

And this time, we changed the batteries, but it didn’t do anything. It kept beeping and saying it was low on batteries. Eventually, we just disconnected the stupid thing and went back to bed.

Long term, we’ll have to replace it, but for now, it can’t beep at us, which feels like a moral victory, if nothing else.

In book news, Somewhat Unreal is really getting to the exciting part at the end, which makes me happy. Once you start to see that the book is almost finished, almost ready to share, it’s very invigorating.

I just need to spend more time writing and less time researching how to buy a smoke detector that doesn’t beep falsely in the middle of the night.

By the way, if anyone knows of any good brands that don’t beep for no reason at two in the morning, let me know. We’re in the market.

Sometimes lately I’ve been considering house-swapping. It sounds good in theory. We could trade with another family who lives somewhere more interesting and they could live in my house for a month and I could stay in their house for a month. It sounds good.

But then, when I really think about it, I don’t actually want random strangers in my house at all. Sleeping in my bed, using my Instant Pot, reading my books, being awoken by my smoke detectors. No way!

So house-swapping is probably not for me.

But I do feel a sense of wanderlust lately. I want to do something different somewhere else.

And if nothing else, I just want the smoke detectors to quit going off at night.
